The Legacy Behind the Counter

Meet Dixon & Son

Step into Dixon & Son at The Avenues Centre, and you’re stepping into something more than just a butcher shop — you’re stepping into five generations of passion, purpose, and proud tradition.

This year, Dixon & Son celebrates 2 years in Hilton — a milestone not just for their family, but for the entire community. Their story is one of legacy and heart, where the love of good food runs deep, and the connection to customers runs even deeper.

At the heart of it all, it’s a passion for food that was reignited during the uncertainty of COVID-19. After more than 30 years away from the meat industry, Dave Dixon found himself consulting again and rediscovering what he loved. “That season reignited my love for meat,” he says. “It brought our family back to what we know — and Hilton became the perfect place for us to share it again.”

The Dixon family’s roots in the butchery trade stretch back over 100 years to the centre of Pietermaritzburg. From Dave’s great-grandfather to his youngest son today, their legacy continues — now five generations strong. “This business was predominantly his idea,” Dave shares proudly about his son, Mark. “It’s amazing to see that spark passed down. We’re building something that connects our past to the future.”

For Dixon & Son, this business is more than just meat — it’s a calling. Their hope for what’s ahead? To continue serving the community, creating opportunities for the next generation, and passing on not just a family business, but a legacy of care, excellence, and commitment.

As Dave puts it, “It’s not just about surviving the challenges — it’s about building something that lasts. For our family. For Hilton.”
